Are You a Victim of Your Own Unhealthy Habits?

“The CDC estimates that over 90 percent of disease is caused by diet, lifestyle, and environmental factors.”

Did you realize that your diet and lifestyle (two things you can control) could be making you sick? If you are ready to make some changes that will help you live healthier and longer, here are three simple ideas you can do starting NOW to get yourself on a path to better health:

  1. Eat more vegetables. Of course you have heard this before, but have you done it? It’s easy to add more vegetables to your diet by choosing them instead of processed snacks like crackers or potato chips. You might be amazed at the difference in how you look and feel just by substituting carrot sticks as a side to your sandwich, or ordering a salad instead of French fries. Additionally, eating a diet rich in vegetables can reduce your risks for heart disease, stroke, cancer and Type 2 diabetes.
  2. Walk more. The American Heart Association says, “It’s the simplest positive change you can make to effectively improve your heart health.” If you’re not that into exercise, don’t worry – the odds are in your favor. Walking has the lowest dropout rate of all physical activities! So, once you get started for 30 minutes a day, you’ll most likely stick with it, especially in nicer weather. As an added bonus, try walking with a friend who likes to talk. Before you know it, you’ll have walked and gotten caught up on each other’s lives while getting in shape!
  3. Kill ANTs. Automatic Negative Thoughts happen, well, automatically. If you are thinking negative thoughts multiple times throughout your day, you are activating stress hormones and creating anxiety. When a negative thought enters your mind (“Oh, great. Here come’s Betty again. She always complains about something.” Or, “Ugh. I hate driving in Atlanta traffic!”), replace it with a positive thought instead. What an easy way to lower your stress in just about any situation.

If you want to improve your diet and lifestyle, start now. You don’t need any special equipment to make these three simple changes that could very well change your life.
