Frozen Shoulder Q & A

What is frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder syndrome (FSS) typically affects men and women between the ages of 40 and 60. It occurs more often in women, and the symptoms are extremely painful. FSS often comes with near or complete loss of motion in the affected shoulder.

With FSS, the shoulder tissues stiffen, adhesions develop, and sometimes the fluid around the shoulder joint decreases. A telltale sign that you may have frozen shoulder, is that you are unable to move your shoulder on your own, or even with the help of someone else.

How does frozen shoulder develop?

FSS begins with the misalignment of the skull on the first vertebra at the top of your spine. This puts tension on your cranial nerve and interferes with your ability to lift your arm in a normal range of motion.

Frozen shoulder develops in three stages: freezing, frozen, and thawing over the course of six weeks to two years. It’s extremely painful during the “freezing” stage as your shoulder loses range of motion. Pain may actually decrease during the “frozen” or adhesive stage, but the constant stiffness in your shoulder affects daily activities, such as getting dressed or brushing your teeth.

The third or “thawing” stage of frozen shoulder syndrome is when you regain range of motion, feel less pain, and are able to return to your normal everyday activities without issue.

What is the OTZ method of treating frozen shoulder?

There are several methods of treating frozen shoulder syndrome, but many fall short of eliminating pain or restoring complete range of motion. Dr. Cavallo is certified in the OTZ method, the most comprehensive nonsurgical treatment of FSS. Since 2006, Dr. Cavallo has successfully restored full range of motion to hundreds of FSS sufferers.

The OTZ method is a combination of soft tissue therapy and manual adjustments along with gentle manipulation of the shoulder. This method corrects the nerve blockage in the affected shoulder, and many patients feel relief from severe pain after the very first treatment. Over a series of OTZ treatments, most men and women experience complete pain relief and restored range of motion without medication or surgery.

If you’re suffering from the debilitating effects of frozen shoulder and have tried other treatment options without success, schedule an appointment with Dr. Cavallo, Georgia’s frozen shoulder expert.
